Though I've helped film more than a handful of projects, and created my own, I'm very conscious of my skill level and amount I still have to learn. I have just a little skill, and lots to learn!
With the boom in affordable HD video cameras and the growing popularity of the GoPro, it seems a lot of people have jumped in to the video/film making game. But there are a few guys that have risen to the top and become solid sources for some of the best stories, footage and entertainment you'll find in and out of the fly fishing industry.
One of those is Rolf Nylinder of Frontside Fly. Rolf, a Swedish filmmaker, has brought us both short stories as well as a feature length film, A Backyard in Nowhere. He shoots and produces films from all over the world and I find a lot of similarities in the group of guys often featured in his films and my buddies - fun loving, great fisherman, and not afraid to bust each others chops.
Rolf recently released the first of a multi episode series; Meanwhile Upstream. It's the story of a recent trip, involving plenty of laughter, jokes and the biggest tent I've ever seen. This episode sets the table for their trip and the second episode to come.
It's short stories and films like this that really get me excited to not only be on the water with a bunch of buddies, but to try and tell a story in the same fashion. All of Rolf's videos not only highlight some great fish porn, but they tell a story and give the audience a story with which they can connect. And he's set the bar high for all those trying to do the same.
